Courage, resilience, determination. Just a few words to describe Year 5 on day two. And what a day it has been!
Day Two began with the Mrs Newham hair salon. Some beautiful hairstyles indeed, girls! Some rooms were very lively from the go… others less so!
At 8am sharp, we headed for breakfast, followed by the world famous room inspection. The room inspectors arrived, delivered their judgements and stole a sweet or two. And looked fabulous while doing so. Happily, most rooms produced stellar efforts to make sure that rooms were clean, clothes were stored tidily, beds made and teddies entertained.
Today, our focus was a walk through the beautiful Wiltshire countryside to Oliver’s Castle, site of a Civil War battle. We learnt to use a map and compass and we were so pleased to see the children lead the way and navigate. We walked through woodland and farmland before arriving at the bottom of the hill. It was a steep climb and a difficult one, but with perseverance and a few deep breaths, the children all made it.
At the top of the hill, we re-enacted the battle. Battle cries rang out across the Wiltshire countryside, and we charged across the hilltop. We learned how soldiers fled down almost sheer drops to find safety, only to land in what is now known as the “bloody ditch”. We slid and walked down the slope and with a few muddy backsides, we made our way to the spa! At a natural spring, we used clay to give ourselves a lovely face mask and finished the walk with smooth and beautiful skin!
One big push later and we were back at Braeside. After a delicious dinner (sausage and chips tonight!), we prepared for the firepit.
We were so fortunate to be joined by Mr Everitt this evening who led us in some raucous campfire songs. We told jokes, acted out stories (great ventriloquism, Alfie and Alexander!) and many of us headed for hot chocolate with croaky voices. With one final hot chocolate, we jumped into bed, ready for our third and final day. We can’t wait for tomorrow’s adventures!
