“During my visit I saw several reading lessons. Pupils were fully engaged, enjoying the texts and engaging in discussion about the narratives, including interesting vocabulary and text structure. For example, one small group were reading a demanding text along with the teacher, enjoying the repetition and explanation of new vocabulary. In another lesson, Year 6 were completely absorbed in a text in which the main character had challenges similar to some pupils in the class. The pace and energy of the reading meant that all pupils were fully engaged. It also seemed to me that this was the result of long-standing exposure to and engagement with high quality texts over time. Truly impressive.”
