Yesterday, Year 5 had a thrilling day in the woods learning all about the Best of British Nature.
We started the day looking at native British trees and we learnt that holly leaves begin their lives with no spikes at all. Once the tree grows up, it makes the perfect place for birds to nest because predators don’t like the sharp prickles. We went on to learn about willow and found out how to make charcoal from it.
Some children chose to make god’s eyes and pendants from beech wood which makes the perfect disc when it is sawed. Others spent their day whittling wood to make the most amazing bow and arrow sets.
There were mud cafes, gold mines and even a traditional British wedding. What a day!
