Year 5 and 6 took part in a wonderful Mayan Day. The children arrived at school resplendent in homemade Mayan headdresses.
One group created statues of Mayan Gods, while the other half learnt about the Mayan calendar.
Everyone tried their hand at some Central American cooking. We all cooked and enjoyed eating quesadillas and some of us also made some accompanying salsa and guacamole dips.
In the afternoon, we also learnt about the complexities of the Mayan alphabet and used hieroglyphics to write our name. To end the day, we learnt about the gory tradition of sacrifice. A few of our number were sacrificed to the Gods in the hope of a successful harvest or more rain.
