We had another awesome afternoon in the forest on Wednesday and we finished this week by posing the question: why should children learn about the Ancient Maya in school? Children sorted through different points to come up with their own reasons… and then the debate began! I was so proud to hear such well informed arguments, full of fascinating historical knowledge including the importance of science and astronomy in ancient Mayan culture, the use of zero in mathematics, building and engineering and the importance of religion in ancient Mayan life.
The children also thought it was massively important that I post a picture of their artwork from this week. We took an image from a Mayan story, divided it up into smaller pieces so that everyone had ‘a section’ and then the children worked together to create and match-up their pieces. There was a very proud gasp when we put all the pieces back together on our display!
