We had an exciting afternoon in the woods on Friday!
We began our session by learning about different types of bird nests and the materials various species use to build them. Mr Jarvis then set us a challenge: to create our own nests strong enough to hold an egg, ready for a competition at the end of the day to see whose nest was the most robust! The children quickly got to work, using a range of creative ideas and clever strategies to build sturdy nests.
Whilst some children were busy making nests, others got to work slicing apples ready to toast over the fire, with sugar and cinnamon for dipping once they were toasted. They certainly went down a treat!
We ended our session with our nest and egg dropping competition! One by one, the nests were dropped from a tree to see which designs were strong enough to protect their egg. Amazingly, all of the eggs survived the first round, so we moved on to round two and dropped them from even higher up the tree! The nests proved to be incredibly sturdy and, after four rounds, two eggs remained fully intact. Fantastic work, Elder Class!
