Rowan and Oak classes enjoyed an amazing morning with the Heritage Group, concluding our History unit on the Anglo-Saxons. Firstly, the Heritage Group shared a presentation on the Anglo-Saxons in Aldbourne and we were so interested to find out about the Anglo-Saxon cemetery found in Valley View and Barnes Yard. We noticed the similarities between the Anglo-Saxon’s language and modern day English: so many of our words come from the language that they spoke. Even the Lord’s Prayer sounds in Old English sounds very similar to what we would say today!

Afterwards, we had a chance to explore lots of Anglo-Saxon artefacts and replicas that the Heritage Group brought in from Devizes museum for us to see! We loved dressing up as Anglo-Saxon soldiers, making seaxes (Anglo-Saxon knives) and jewellery and exploring day-to-day items such as combs, coins and cutlery.

Thank you so much to the Heritage group for bringing history to life for us and for sharing your vast and incredible knowledge with us!
