We have had a wonderfully busy couple of weeks in Hazel Class, with lots of opportunities to investigate, create and put our learning into practice.
In History we investigated the Great Fire of London and explored why the fire spread so quickly and why so many houses were destroyed. The children have been particularly fascinated by what London was like in 1666 and the clues that can help us understand what happened.
In Art, we experimented with Brusho to create colourful backgrounds, choosing whether we wanted to work with warm or cool colours. Once our backgrounds were dry, we added decorative spirals using marker pens, thinking carefully about making our spirals different sizes. We then took our spiral designs into three dimensions, creating little bead spirals and adding plasticine bodies to make our very own 3D snails!
We have also been developing our Geography and map skills. We looked closely at maps of our school and talked about how symbols can be used to represent different places and features. The children then added their own symbols to our playground map to show where different things are located.
Our woodwork station has been a huge hit! The children have loved putting their practical skills to the test, carefully designing, measuring, sawing and gluing as they work to bring their ideas to life. It has been wonderful to see their creativity, perseverance and problem-solving skills in action.
As part of our learning about the seasons, we talked about the changes we notice throughout the year. The children then chose how they wanted to respond to their learning. Some designed and built houses to help different animals shelter, while others created beautiful autumn collages using a range of materials and natural colours.
Finally, we have begun exploring the Creation Story from Genesis and learning about how some Christians believe the world was created. We have been thinking about the different days of Creation and have started making models to represent each part of the story. These will help us to retell the story and remember the order of events.
