Our current focus in art is a portraiture unit based on exploring identity. Recently we have been finding our about several different artists and their work. We explored the works of Yinka Shonibare and Thandiwe Muriu. Shonibare’s sculptural pieces and Muriu’s photograph portraits provoked lots of thoughts, intrigue, questions and ideas… Next we had a go at blind contour drawing – a fun way to develop our understanding of portrait making and a way to help us understand that art is not always about perfection: sometimes taking an element of control away from the process of making art can result in even more expressive, unique and impressive ideas.
