For a small village school, St Michael’s has wonderful sports facilities – a hard court marked out for netball, tennis and small-sided games, a field marked out with a football pitch, our all-weather running track and a hall equipped for both gymnastics and dance.
We utilise our facilities to deliver a broad and balanced PE curriculum, with all children receiving two hours of physical activity every week. The programme is co-ordinated by a specialist PE teacher, and for a large part of the year, our work is driven by fundamental movement skills alongside the explicit teaching of the qualities that lead to great sports people. We use RealPE to support our teaching of cognitive, physical, personal, social, creative and health and fitness skills. We are incredibly proud to support the daily mile initiative, which is all about improving the health and wellbeing of children. The benefits they gain are physical, emotional, social and mental – all from running or jogging, at their own pace, every day
By the end of Key stage two all pupils will have taken part in gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming, football, hockey, bee netball, tag rugby, tennis, kwik cricket, rounders and athletics. In addition, we make full use of our school grounds to incorporate outdoor learning throughout the curriculum and further enhance our provision with residential visits in years 5 and 6.
All our pupils are encouraged to attend extra-curricular sports activities, which are delivered by school staff and sports companies. The programme varies from term to term, but has in the past included activities such as; dance, high fives, kwik cricket, football, tag rugby and athletics. This year we have also added lunchtime PE clubs run by our own staff and ably assisted by our specially trained Year 6 Sports Leaders.
At various times during the year we organise house and class sporting competitions, or performances We also offer all our pupils the opportunity to take part in inter-school sports against our cluster primary schools, both in competitive tournaments, and co-operative festivals.
Our children always represent us magnificently, playing with both skill and exemplary sportsmanship.
