Year 3 – Overview for the Winter Terms

Teacher – Mr Everitt, Mrs Dutton, Mrs Godwin

‘How are we better together’

Our topic this term is all based around trying to answer this ‘big question’. We will start by talking a trip back to The Stone Age and investigate why early humans made the decision to start living in communities and not in isolation. We will then quickly move on to exploring settlements and try to understand how and why communities form. To bring us bang up to date, we will be investigating online communities and the power of social media. Furthermore, the children will be creating their own blog about endangered species and considering the power of standing together to fight for a cause that they feel passionate about. In art, the children will be looking at evidence of early man from studying and recreating cave paintings while in DT the children will be using textiles to create a piece of art to raise awareness about an endangered species. Our PE focus for this term continues to be REAL PE until half term when we will begin our swimming sessions.

RE this term will focus on the beliefs and practices of Judaism and the feast of Passover, as well as exploring our school value of Courage. Mrs Collister will be continuing to support our French lessons where we will focus on describing ourselves and our families. In music, half the class will continue to work with Mrs Lomas for their brass lessons until they swap over at February half term, whist the rest of the class will be exploring tempo and rhythm with Mrs Dutton.

Class Information

The most effective way to learn to read is to do to every day. Please continue to read with your child and record their reading in their reading record even if they choose to read something of their own.

Spelling homework will be given each week on a Friday to be handed in the following Thursday. This will be based on what we plan to cover in the coming week.

This term we are going to have a big focus on times tables and will be starting the 99 Club in class. Homework will be to complete a 99 club test at home and practice the numbers facts they are not secure with.
