Year 3 – Overview for the Summer Terms

Teacher – Miss Fisher, Mr Everitt, Mrs Dutton, Mrs Godwin

‘How does the view from our window shape our lives’

Our topic this term is all based around trying to answer this ‘big question’. We will start by looking at Camille Pissarro’s ‘View From My Window’, which will lead on to us considering views from our own houses and school. We will then move on to exploring how views and landscapes have changed over time and whether they have changed for the better. In art, the children will be recreating Pissarro’s painting and thinking about what a modern version of the masterpiece might look like. In DT the children will be finding out about what is produced locally and we will be undertaking an exciting project to create and market our very own local product. Our PE focus for this term continues to be REAL PE, small ball skills and our swimming sessions. Through science, the children will be delving into the world of plants and understanding what they need to grow.

RE this term will focus on the beliefs and practices of Judaism and their Rights of Passage, as well as exploring our school value of Service. Mrs Collister will be continuing to support our French lessons where we will focus on exploring how to order food in a café. In music, half the class will continue to work with Mrs Lomas for their brass lessons, whist the rest of the class will be learning how to play the glockenspiels to ‘The Dragon Song’ and to see how our imagination is provoked by different pieces of world music.

Class Information

The term will start with a focus on Jeanie Baker’s book ‘My Window’.  We will explore the features that make a good piece of descriptive writing before creating some descriptions of our own based on the beautiful images in the book. The children will then use their newly learnt skills to write descriptive pieces on Pissarro’s painting. After half term, our attentions will turn to our persuasive powers as we aim to convince people to protect the special views that we see from our windows. We will be debating conservation issues before writing some strong worded letters…look out!

Initially, we will be exploring the topic of fractions and understanding fully how to order, compare, add and subtract them. Following this, we will be introducing the children to decimal numbers before exploring 2d and 3d shapes. We will continue to explore numbers of ever increasing size using investigations and puzzles to deepen our understanding. Please continue to work on times tables and number facts at home with your children. All the children have a Times Table Rockstar account and it would be great if you could encourage them to use it as much as possible.

Other information

The most effective way to learn to read is to do it every day. Please continue to read with your child and record their reading in their reading record even if they choose to read something of their own.

Currently, spelling homework is either set on www.spellingshed.com or www.nessy.com. The children have their logins stuck in the front of their homework books. The words will be changed weekly.

This term we are going to have a big focus on times tables. We are currently using a fantastic online platform called Times Table Rockstars. Please encourage your child to log on to www.ttrockstars.com each week to practice. I will be setting the tables to practice each week.
