Year 2 – Overview for the Summer Terms
Teachers – Miss James and Miss Walton
Our Topic this term gives us many opportunities to explore different areas of the curriculum. In history we will investigate the moon landing, the space race and find about famous astronauts. We will use Van Gogh’s Starry Night to learn about creating tints and tones and the children will produce their own version using the skills we have taught them. In science we will use the context of space to investigate different materials, conditions needed for the growth of plants and what humans need to survive and thrive. We will become geographers as we create our own planet maps and use geographical language to describe them. We will create moon buggies as part of our design and technology lessons and will teach the children the safe use of glue guns and the woodwork tools in order for them to design and produce their own ideas. In RE we will be learning about the Creation and Christmas stories. As always, our classroom will also be full of lots of resources that allow the children to develop their own interests within our topic.
Children will be working on using their sound knowledge and applying new spelling rules to spell words correctly.
The children will be writing recounts about Bob man on the moon using different conjunction and a range of punctuation’s. Later on in the term the children will be writing descriptive pieces about an alien they designed.
The children will be exploring different ways to represent numbers using their place value knowledge. We will be working hard on developing our problem solving skills. We will continue looking at adding and subtracting two digit numbers and applying our understanding of our number facts.
Important Dates: Wednesday 16th October – Winchester Science Museum trip
Important dates will all be listed on our class page on the website
The most effective way to learn to read is to do it EVERYDAY. Please read with your child every day and ask them questions about what they have read. Your child can read their “500 book” or their school reader or a book from home. It really doesn’t matter! Please write ALL books they read in their reading diary.
Each week the children will be given a Maths task and a Spelling task to complete in their homework books. This learning will link to what we have be learning about in class. Please ensure it is completed with a pencil and the work is kept neat. Homework will be handed out on a Friday and collected in on a Wednesday,
Forest Schools- After half term
Each session we like to take three parents with us to the forest to support the children in their play. Please sign up in class if you are able to help.
Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school every day and that it is filled with water (not squash).
Please leave a full PE kit (named) in school including trainers as we are running every day.
Children use their wellies everyday so please ensure these are named and left in school.
