Year 1 – Overview for the Autumn Terms

Teachers – MRS GODFREY, MRS STANDFAST AND MRS WALTON

SPACE

Our Topic this term gives us many opportunities to explore different areas of the curriculum. In history we will investigate the moon landing, the space race and find about famous astronauts.  We will use Van Gogh’s Starry Night to learn about creating tints and tones and the children will produce their own version using the skills we have taught them.  In science we will use the context of space to investigate different materials, conditions needed for the growth of plants and what humans need to survive and thrive.  We will become geographers as we create our own planet maps and use geographical language to describe them.  We will create moon buggies as part of our design and technology lessons and will teach the children the safe use of glue guns and the woodwork tools in order for them to design and produce their own ideas.  In RE we will be learning about the Creation and Christmas stories.  As always, our classroom will also be full of lots of resources that allow the children to develop their own interests within our topic.

Phonics

Children will consolidate the sounds they have learnt in reception and begin to learn alternative spellings for the most common sounds.

English

We will be focussing on applying our phonics knowledge in our writing as we being to write more complex sentences and refine our handwriting skills.

Maths

We will be securing the children’s understanding of part whole models (eg 10 if 10 is the whole, 5 and 5 could be the parts or 4 and 6) in order to ensure true understanding of addition and subtraction within 10, as well as offering lots of opportunities for them to explore shape and measure in their own busy time.

Important Date:  Wednesday 16th October – Winchester Science Museum trip

Other dates will all be listed on our class page on the website.

Class Information

Reading

The most effective way to learn to read is to do it every day. Please continue to read with your child as much as possible.  Your child can read their “500 book”, their school reader or a book from home; it really doesn’t matter!

Phonics

www.phonicsplay.co.uk   has games to help your children practise their sounds at home.

Home Learning and Sound tins

As we begin to learn a new set of sounds, please can you send in the sound tin used in reception.  Homework will come home on a Friday and will need to be returned the following Wednesday  – please see the weekly post for the page that needs to be completed.

Forest Schools

We will be visiting the forest on Monday afternoons in term 1.  Each session we like to take three parents with us to the forest to support the children in their play. Please sign up in class if you are able to help.

Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school every day and that it is filled with water (not squash).

Please leave a full PE kit, trainers and wellies in school every day and ensure they are all named.
