Year 3 – Overview for the Autumn Terms

Teacher – Mr Everitt, Mrs Budd and Mrs Kench

Our Topic this term is all about ‘Coasts’ from Pirates to fossils and everything in between. It will touch on many of the curriculum areas we will be studying.

In Geography we will be using geographical vocabulary to understand coastal features as well as planning our trip to Dunraven Bay using maps. Using our historical skills, the children will discover more about British history surrounding our coastlines from discoveries to holidays.

In Science we will be learning how to classify. We will be exploring the variety of life on earth and finding out more about rock pools and fossils linked to our trip. Art will provide an opportunity to study the colours of the sea and explore mixing and sketching before creating their own masterpiece.

In PE we will be following a unit on balls skills before linking to our topic through a pirate dance.. Throughout both blocks we will be developing our Personal and Social skills via Real PE.

In RE this term we will learn about what Christians understand from the Creation Story before turning our attention towards whether Christmas has lost its true meaning. Healthy friendships will be a focus of our PSHE. Mrs Collister will be continuing to support our French lessons where we will focus on developing our greetings, numbers and conversations. In music sessions the children will continue to follow the Charanga music scheme.

In English the children will be using our topic as a stimulus for writing. Using the book ‘The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate’, the children will start by exploring descriptions of characters and settings before entering into writing some pirate adventures of their own. Later in the term, the children will be researching famous pirates from the past and writing some information texts about them. As ever, there will be a focus on grammar throughout and Mrs Budd will also be developing reading skills to support their writing.

In maths the children will be exploring numbers up to 1000 using their knowledge of place value. Children will be learning to order, estimate and round numbers and well as using negative numbers. Throughout the year, we will have a big focus on learning all our times tables starting this term by revisiting the 10’s, 2’s and 5’s before launching into the 4’s,8’s, 3’s and 6’s.

Class Information/Home Learning

The most effective way to learn to read is to do it every day. Please continue to read with your child and record their reading in their reading record even if they choose to read something of their own.

The children will follow the Year 3 curriculum for spellings and will be set a task from their Spelling Homework book to complete each week.

Each week we will have a focus times table to practise in class. Children will also be set Maths Homework in line with the Year 3 Maths Curriculum.

PE will usually take place on a Friday but PE kits should be brought in on a Monday and should stay in school all week. We run every day so all children need trainers in school.

Children should bring a water bottle to school every day and as the weather is unpredictable a coat and a sunhat should also be brought to school daily.

Important dates will all be listed on our class page on the website.
