Sports Funding

From the academic year 2013-2014, the Government introduced additional funding to improve the provision of physical education and sport in primary schools.

The funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health & Culture, Media & Sport. It is ring-fenced and can only be spent on provision of PE and sport. Schools have the freedom to choose how they spend it.

Below is an overview of how we have decided to use this funding since it’s inception.

We have employed a specialist PE teacher to:

  • Teach PE in every year group
  • Establish a programme of paired teaching, where the specialist works with every class teacher to deliver a dance unit
  • Ensure our participation in cluster sports festivals
  • Organise inter-house competitive sports matches
  • Run after school PE and sporting clubs: high fives, gymnastics and cricket
  • Update delivery of the PE curriculum
  • Organised for Teaching Assistants and children to attend The Change for Life course
  • Overhaul and revamp sports day
  • Create an inventory of PE resources and identify gaps
  • Arrange for our Able Gifted and Talented (AGAT) children to attend a moderation morning at a feeder secondary school
  • Creation of Sports Leaders
  • Procure appropriate additional resources including gym mats and sports kit

The impact of this is:

  • The quality of PE delivery has increased significantly
  • Non-PE teaching staff have increased confidence to deliver both gymnastics and dance units
  • The range and quality of resources available to all year groups continues to improve
  • Children now have opportunities to take part in more competitive sports
  • An increased number of children are participating in after school clubs
  • Children experience a greater range of both cooperative and competitive activities during sports day
  • Staff are now more able to access equipment and resources
  • AGAT children are more formally recognised
  • Continued Professional Development (CPD) for both PE specialists and non-PE specialists
